• History of The Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce

  • The St. James Board of Trade received its charter on March 19, 1930, and its certificate of formation was officially recorded on June 18, 1930. Originally known as the St. James Chamber of Commerce from 1949, it was later formally recognized as such by the Boards of Trade Act in 1966.

On June 25, 1969, the Assiniboia Chamber, which was established in 1959, merged with the St. James Chamber, creating the St. James-Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce.

In 1996, during the Annual General Meeting, the name underwent another change to The Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce, aligning it more accurately with the part of the City of Winnipeg it represents.

Our service territory encompasses the western half of the City of Winnipeg, spanning from St. James Street to all points north, west, and south, extending to the city limits. This includes prominent areas like the airport region, Centreport, Red River Exhibition Park, Assiniboia Downs complexes, and the Kenaston Boulevard Power Centres.

At the heart of our mission lies the responsibility to effectively represent the interests of over 100,000 citizens and 4,000 businesses that reside, work, learn, and thrive in West Winnipeg.

  • The Chamber was gifted this plaque from the City of St. James in what we can assume was in 1956 when the RM of St. James became a city. We are told only a few of these exist. It is a plaster emblem mounted on a velvet background.
